Darling Distraction

I'm reviving my Portland exploration series now that the weather is getting nicer - previously I've talked about the OSHU Tram, Portland Nursery, and the Japanese Gardens. Today I'm excited to delve into one of my favorite subjects - shopping!

Tucked away on the corner of NE Alberta and 16th St is the store Darling Distraction - a mecca of all things "cool girl" (in the BEST BEST way). I discovered this place a year ago while wandering around Alberta with my friend Elissa. We were looking for some creative birthday and congrats cards and boy did Darling Distraction deliver! I'm pretty sure we walked out with wayyy more than just a few cards.

Owner Karina Lopez opened Darling Distraction after a move from Northern California to Portland. She designs many of the pins, patches, and stationary herself but has also carefully curated an amazing selection of products from brands like ban.do, Voluspa, Tuesday Bassen, Stay Home Club and more. Products change pretty frequently and as about half their business is done through their online store, items can sell out. I've definitely missed the boat on a few pieces before!

Darling Distraction has also been the host of some really cool parties in the past - though their store space is small, they make it work! Sometimes they host designer/illustrator meet & greets or costume contests or nail art tables, but they always have adorable food & cocktails (perfect Instagram material!). They always stock the cutest partyware as well - streamers are always on hand!

I can't get over how Instagram-friendly this store is - not something that is necessarily important for every store but I think it's something more retailers need to take into account. The more people want to hang out in and photograph your store, the more your products get shared, the more your brand gets exposure. And every time I come into Darling Distraction I just want a million selfies in front of their foliage wallpaper (I refrain, but still!)

On my trip to the store, I picked up some goodies. I definitely only needed a bday card but found some other things I HAD to have.

I picked up the bday card, and then splurged on some cactus pens (both black ink), a pair of sunglasses, a patch and some socks!

Aren't these sunglasses AMAZING??? I'm obsessed.

I'm really obsessed with eyes on everything right now (this is my phone case) so I had to get these eye socks and this anime eyes patch

Darling Distraction also has an amazing Instagram presence full of inspiration - definitely give it a follow.

I hope you've enjoyed this little peek into one of my favorite Portland shops! Let me know where I should go next - I'm always discovering cool places to shop in Portland.
